Measuring the scope and virality of a rumor

Points to bear in mind...

Propagation indicators

  • Volume of mentions: Track the total number of publications and shares linked to a story. This can give a first indication of its impact and reach.
  • Engagement rate: Analyze reactions, comments and interactions to gauge the interest generated by the story. A high engagement rate may indicate a particular resonance with the audience and signal a need for further analysis.

Tracking progress over time

  • Temporal analysis: observe how a rumor evolves over time and through different channels. Spikes in mentions can often coincide with news-related events, offering clues as to why they spread. For example, a rumor linked to a health crisis may gain momentum around a government announcement.

Assessing potential impact

  • Media echo: If a rumor is picked up by traditional media, this gives it new legitimacy and makes it more difficult to correct. It is therefore crucial to monitor how the media cover these stories, as their amplification can make it more difficult to dispel the misleading or biased narrative.
